Ranked-choice voting, explained
Voters rank candidates in order of preference, and the count finds a true majority winner — in one ballot, no runoff. Single-winner races use instant-runoff voting (IRV); multi-seat races use single transferable vote (STV).

Mark a 1st, 2nd, 3rd — as few as you like.
Count first choices
Over half the vote wins outright.
Drop the last place
Those ballots move to the next choice.
Repeat to a majority
Round by round until someone passes 50%.
A quick example
9 voters, 3 candidates — a majority needs 5.
No one hits 5 — Chen is out; those ballots move on.

Several seats? That's STV.
Multi-seat races go proportional: reach a quota to win, and surplus votes transfer onward — so no one bloc sweeps every seat.
What about a tie?
The default rule is fixed and fully reproducible: earlier rounds break it, then a set order. Prefer to settle ties by lot? Switch any election to a random draw — seeded, so it's fair yet repeatable.

What we can — and can’t — promise
No internet voting is provably “unhackable” — and we won’t pretend otherwise. What Voteify gives you is the credible standard: phishing-resistant organizer accounts, authenticated voters, encrypted secret ballots, and an independently verifiable count — anyone can recompute the result from the published ballots, and every voter can confirm theirs is included. We’re candid about the limit, too: to tally, our server decrypts ballots, so we don’t yet hide votes from ourselves — but the result’s correctness doesn’t depend on trusting us.
